Well, it turns out that nature, specifically trees, actually does communicate. However, communication happens not in the air as to how human sounds do, but it happens right under the soil where the dense, complex network of roots and chemical signals are happening between trees. This is what Suzanne Simard, an ecologist, has discovered in her research of trees in the forest.  

According to Simard, there is more than meets your eye when you are seeing a forest. Trees are the very foundation of forests, and they are more than just living species that absorb carbon and release oxygen. They have a complex interaction with one another underground.  

When you try to study and observe how they interact with other trees through their root systems, you would see a completely different world where biological pathways that connect trees provide an insight into how they communicate. 

This s a great thing about forests, they have complex systems as well as the ability to self-heal. This is done when more mature trees communicate and help the younger trees as well as seedlings to grow and nurture them as they do. In her study using 80 replicas of trees, Simard observed that there is a co-dependency that is happening in the forests. Trees do not compete, rather they collaborate both in propagation and growth. Similar to the mature trees, also called as mother trees, able trees also send carbon, water, phosphorous, nitrogen, and other nutrients to trees that send distress signals in the group. Their relationship is often dependent on factors like proximity and the amount of shade these trees receive daily.  

This is also reflective of the trees that we have in our houses.
